Helen Friel is a paper engineer and author based in London. After studying graphic design and illustration at Central Saint Martins, she began working in paper and fell in love with the medium.
Her latest project for Brussels Airlines illustrates The Great American Rail Trail, a path set across the width of America for bikers and hikers. ‘My client had a fairly clear idea of what they wanted for this project.’ Helen tells The Peep. ‘The trickiest part of this project was the scale; I needed to be able to photograph the models close up as well as on the map. To use the same ones for the main and spot images would have required the map of America to be a metre wide. To get around this I made two sets of models – a small scale one for the map and larger scale for the spot images.’
