Ceramic artist Ho Lai takes inspiration from microscopic images of cells and molecules

20.08.19

Ho Lai is a ceramic artist from Hong Kong, currently based in London. Her work explores the contemporary nature of ceramics, experimenting with the materials and processes involved in its creation.

Ho finds poetics in the transformation of material through working in an experimental way. She draws inspiration from microscopic images, medical illustrations and cross-sectional diagrams, that describe the structure and the formation of the human body, which is composed of aggregates of cells, atoms and molecules. Her new series of work, ‘To The Same Place’, translates this by using aggregates of dried colour clay in various sizes.

This ties in with the reference from The Bible – All go to the same place. All come from dust, and to dust all return.  (Ecclesiastes 3:20) – where mankind is understood to be made from the dust by God.
